K.O.M.M.- Social Orientation for unaccompanied children and youths

 “K.O.M.M.”
(k = communicative, = optimistic, m = multicultural, m = Munich)

K.O.M.M is a synonym for the work of our association with unaccompanied young refugees. The abreviation was found by the youths themselves and means Communicative, Optimistic, Multinational, Munich”. Due to continuous crisis in countries in Asia and Africa several hundreds of unaccompanied youth refugees come to Munich every year. According to experiences of the association "Hilfe von Mensch zu Mensch" these youths are often traumatized by war and escape. Many of them have lost one or even both parents. Therefore they need our help and special protection. The project K.O.O.M was founded in order to look after immediately, orientate them to the structures of the host country and give them support confidence in the new environment.

The aim of the project is to improve and promote the youth’s chances by an extensive pedagogic, school and social concept as well as by a cultural integration programme.

How?
The integrative concept comprises the fields of school, free time and cultural integration. The youth refugees are looked after by a team of qualified teachers, social education workers and student tutors. This makes it possible for us to confront the youth’s problems in their full complexity. The basis of the integratice concept is the course programme. In the courses, youths require necesarry competences for their development by intensive reading and writing practice and task-based language teaching.

Aims of our language courses are:

-          teaching reading and writing skills by literacy campaign courses
-          promotion of communicative skills
-          preparation for border class or state school
-          school additional measures to reach secondary modern school certificate

In our cultural integration programme the youths are shown the German culture by course-based study trips, museum visits etc. The pedagogic free time programme comprises trips, stays in Schullandheime lasting several days as well as differents games and sports. By this, the youth’s social competences and self confidence shall be strenthened and promoted and key qualifications for school and profession like reliability, fairness and team work shall be trained.

Further measures of the project take place at the refugee Erstaufnahmestelle in Munich. The youths are offered first orientation help in forms of language and computer courses and conversation forums there.
